WENHAM, Mass. -- Endicott College scored five times in the final 27 minutes to upend the 19th-ranked University of New England field hockey team, 5-0, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game played Saturday afternoon at the Brigham Athletic Complex on the campus of Gordon College. The Gulls and Nor'easters are now tied atop the league standings at 5-1.
With their fifth win in the last six outings, Endicott improves to 6-8 on the season. The loss is the first of the year for UNE (13-1), after Big Blue reeled off the longest win streak in program history by four (9 straight in 2009). The Nor'easters had defeated the Gulls back on September 17, 4-2, in the first meeting of the season.
After a scoreless first period that saw only seven shots taken between the two teams and no scoring, the hosts broke through in the 44th minute, when first-year Emily Sawchuck (Cumberland, Maine) put in a feed from junior Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine) on a penalty corner play.
Junior Melissa Enright (York Beach, Maine) doubled the margin 2:04 later -- the first of her two goals on the day.
The two-goal advantage held for the next 14 minutes, until Thornberg got on the board with just over 10 minutes remaining and made it 3-0. Thornberg and Enright scored goals 46 seconds apart in the 67th minute to complete the scoring.
Junior Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) turned away five UNE shots to earn her second shutout of the season for the Gulls, who held a 9-3 edge in shot attempts during the final 35 minutes. Nor'easters first-year netminder
Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) also managed five saves in the game.
Both squads return to action on Wednesday with conference matchups, as Endicott hosts Salve Regina University (4 p.m.) and UNE entertains Gordon College (6 p.m.).
The Nor'easters were one of two previously unbeaten teams to fall on Saturday, as No. 7 Montclair State University lost to No. 6 The College of New Jersey.
