UNE places fifth at Pop Crowell Invitational; USM wins

WENHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore Daniel Raboin (Lunenburg, Mass.) and first-year Shane Murphy (Glastonbury, Conn.) crossed the line in 12th and 13th place, respectively, to help the University of New England men's cross country team end up in fifth position out of 22 Saturday at the Pop Crowell Invitational hosted by Gordon College. The University of Southern Maine won the event with a score of 72.

Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) finished second with a team total of 77, while Roger Williams University (112), Assumption College (119), and UNE (127) rounded out the top five.

Alex Gomes of Salem State University captured the individual title with an 8K time of 26:13, besting the next fastest runner by 38 seconds.

After Raboin (27:29) and Murphy (27:40) in the scoring for UNE, first-year Geoff Wahome (Lowell, Mass.) came in at 28:21 (28th), sophomore Nate DiMartino (Hilton, N.Y.) at 28:28 (35th), and first-year Sean Hanrahan (Amston, Conn.) at 28:48 (44th).

The Nor'easters split up next Saturday (Oct. 8), with some members of the team heading to the James Early Invitational (hosted by Westfield State University), and others to the Saint Joseph's College Invitational.
