Emily Koehler and UNE are one of just five teams in Division III without a loss this year
Box Score
WENHAM, Mass. -- Junior
Emily Koehler (Pelham, N.H.) stuffed home her second marker in as many games with 3:15 gone in overtime to keep the University of New England unbeaten as the Nor'easters defeated Gordon College, 4-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey action played Saturday afternoon the Brigham Athletic Complex.
Big Blue now stands at 11-0 on the season (3-0 CCC), having topped the Fighting Scots in four straight meetings. The loss ends a three-game win streak for Gordon, which falls to 5-7 overall (1-2 CCC).
The back-and-forth contest started with a goal from UNE junior
Laura Egounis (Boscawen, N.H.) in the 10th minute, but Fighting Scots first-year Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) tied things up at 1-1 just 2:01 later.
Gordon moved in front at the 19:07 mark when senior Clara Baker (Underhill, Vt.) found the back of the cage, and took that 2-1 advantage into halftime, despite ending the first period on the wrong side of the shot (13-5) and penalty corner (9-3) margins.
Koehler set up senior
Michelle Oswald (Jay, Maine) 9:13 into the second half to level the match, and following a denied penalty stroke attempt, the Nor'easters went back on top (3-2) 10 minutes later when sophomore
Casey Clark (Bethlehem, N.H.) matched Oswald with her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Baker registered her second tally of the game after another 3:44, taking a cross through the middle from junior Leah LaPalombara (Glens Hills, Pa.), to even it up at 3-all.
The remaining 12 minutes of regulation saw chances both ways, but nothing was converted. UNE again held a sizeable cushion in shots (12-6) in the frame, while Gordon managed a slim 7-6 edge in penalty corners.
Big Blue was given the first penalty corner of the extra session, and once the initial shot attempt was turned aside for the 15th save of the day by Gordon sophomore Anna Bury (Huntington, Md.), Koehler pulled a loose ball away from a group in front and beat Bury at the left post for the game-winner.
UNE first-year goalie
Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) recorded eight stops for the Nor'easters, who are off for a week until Nichols College visits Biddeford next Saturday.
