REHOBOTH, Mass. -- Junior Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, Conn.) converted a penalty stroke 3:20 into overtime to lift the Wheaton College field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory over the University of New England in a non-conference match played Sunday afternoon at Faxon Field.
The win was the fourth straight for the Lyons, now 6-2, while the Nor'easters dropped below the .500 mark to 3-4. The game was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Junior Bree Tupper (Winthrop, Maine) opened the scoring for UNE 5:49 into the game, taking a feed from senior Michaela Franey (York, Maine) off a penalty corner and putting home her fifth goal.
Trailing 1-0 at the break, the host Lyons went to work early in the second half. Senior Jessica Strock (Centerville, Mass.) drove home her ninth goal to knot the match at the 38:30 mark. Wheaton took the lead at 55:20 when senior Julia Atwood (Concord, Mass.) scored off a feed from classmate Margaux Bolte (Belmont, Mass.).
Big Blue was able to force overtime just over two minutes later. Tupper set-up first-year Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine) for the rookie forward's first collegiate goal.
Wheaton held a commanding 52-16 advantage in shots, including a 36-4 margin after halftime.
UNE senior goalkeeper Ayla Nelson (Auburn, Mass.) turned aside 20 Wheaton attempts to establish her career single-game high in stops. She also extended her lead as the program's career leader in saves (419), a mark she broke versus Salve Regina University a day earlier.
First-year goalie Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass.) had six stops for the Lyons.
The Nor'easters are idle until next Saturday (Sept. 25) when they host Western New England College at the Big Blue Turf Field (noon start).
