BOOTHBAY, Maine -- The University of New England golf team posted a second-round score of 323 to finish the two-day Maine Intercollegiate Championship at 638 overall, which was good for a two-stroke win over Husson University. The 10-team event was completed Saturday at Boothbay Country Club.
The victory is the first-ever for UNE in the tournament, which had been won the last six seasons by Husson.
The Eagles -- who were the nearest competitors to Big Blue after Friday's opening round, seven strokes behind -- fired 318 on day two to end with a 640 total.
Colby College, and medalist Trip Huber, finished third with a 36-hole total of 649. Huber backed up his 77 from Friday with a 73 for a 150 total, and defeated Aiden Boyce of the University of Southern Maine in a match of cards.
Boyce recorded the round of the championship Saturday, with a three-under-par 68.
First-year
Tyler Moody (Augusta, Maine) led the Nor'easters once again, carding a 79 to finish the event at 156, fourth individually.
Classmates Andrew Emery (Winthrop, Maine) and Mathew Brown (Charleston, Maine) went for 80 (161) and 81 (160), respectively, in support. Junior
Gage Robertson (Freeport, Maine) came in with an 83 (161) to complete the UNE scoring. Senior
Griffin Andrews (Rye, N.H.) finished with a two-day total of 173.
"I am very proud of the team," said head coach
Kasey Keenan. "They showed strong perseverance on the back nine today. We are honored to be State Champs with such a strong playing field of teams."
UMaine Farmington (650), Bates College (652), Southern Maine (655), Saint Joseph's College (661), Bowdoin College (664), UMaine Presque Isle (705), and UMaine Machias (no score) rounded out the field.
The Nor'easters are back in action Tuesday at the Point Sebago Golf Club in Casco for the John Queenan Memorial Tournament, hosted by Saint Joseph's.
