WATERVILLE, Maine -- The University of New England golf team competed at the Colby Classic Sunday, but could not post a team score. The event was held at Waterville Country Club.
The tournament featured a unique format on the par-70 course, with three two-man pairs from each institution playing six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble, and six holes of alternate shot. All three scores from each institution counted towards the team total.
Junior
Gage Robertson (Freeport, Maine) and first-year Mathew Brown (Charleston, Maine) teamed up to fire a seven-over-par 77, while first-year Andrew Emery (Winthrop, Maine) and senior
Adrian Mendes (Seymour, Conn.) worked together to shoot 78. The third duo from UNE was forced to withdraw 2/3 of the way through the round due to one player's poor health.
Colby College "White" took the title with a total of 223, led by the round of the day (72) from the pair of Alex Hymanson and Billy Pettengill.
UMaine Farmington (227), Saint Joseph's College (228), Colby College "Blue" (238), and UMaine Presque Isle (239) completed the field.
Steve Carroll of Colby's "Blue" team had the highlight of the afternoon, making a hole-in-one on the par-3 13th.
The Nor'easters next play at Sunday River Golf Club on Thursday in the UMaine Farmington Invitational.
