BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Nine different players found their way into the scoring column as nationally-ranked Colby College defeated the University of New England, 15-7, in non-conference women's lacrosse action Thursday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The Mules, ranked sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, improve to 3-0 with the win. The Nor'easters (1-1) are winless in five tries against Colby.

Colby jumped in front right from the start, notching a pair of scores 10 seconds apart less than three minutes into the contest.

The margin was still two (4-2) after first-year Nicolle Steel (Petersburg, N.J.) tallied her first career goal with 12:36 left in the first period.

Down a player in the final moments of the half, senior Amy Campbell (North Andover, Mass.) scored to up the lead to 6-2 at the break.

The teams traded the first eight goals of the second frame, until senior Mallory Long (Lewiston, Maine) connected with first-year Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.) at the 9:10 mark to trim the deficit to 10-7. It would be as close as UNE would get, as the Mules reeled off the final five scores to pull away late.

Campbell finished with three goals to lead Colby, while sophomore Claire Donegan (Great Falls, Va.) chipped in with two goals and two assists.

Juniors Katie Briody (Hopewell, N.J.) and Anne Geraghty (Westford, Mass.), as well as first-year Kate Pistel (Amherst, Mass.) each added a pair of markers for the Mules, who out-shot the hosts 37-17.

Steel found the back of the cage for a second time in the final stanza to pace the Nor'easters with two goals. Junior Tara Geraghty (Barrington, R.I.) and first-year Jillian Aslin (Hampton, N.H.) split time between the pipes and picked up five and 10 saves, respectively.

Junior goalkeeper Sarah Warnke (Lakeville, Conn.) made five first-half stops to earn the victory for Colby, which travels to Tufts University Saturday.

UNE opens up The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) play the same day when Anna Maria College comes to Biddeford for a 1 p.m. start.
