Lizzie Wareham sprinted out of the blocks in the 200 free relay, earning a spot at ECACs

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore
Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) swam the first leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay in 25.12 to qualify for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships in late February. The University of New England cruised to victory in the event, and finished off a 157-104 win over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Wednesday evening at the Campus Center.
Wareham also won a pair of individual events for the Nor'easters (8-4), taking the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.45) and 100-yard freestyle (58.22).
First-year
Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) claimed two races of her own for UNE, winning the 200-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle (27.86). In the 200 back, she shattered the Campus Center pool record with a time of 2:23.91, besting the previous mark of 2:25.11 set by Courtney Burdick '09 back during the 2006-07 season.
Saint Joseph's sophomore Hannah Gajewski (Biddeford, Maine) led the Monks (5-2), swimming to victory in both the 100- and 200-yard individual medley events. Gajewski also finished second to UNE's
Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.) in the 200-yard breaststroke.
First-year
Rachel Hanley (Wiscasset, Maine) took second by 0.25 seconds to Gajewski in the 100 IM, but was part of a much closer race early on in the meet. Monks sophomore Rose Maccarrone (Hingham, Maine) edged Hanley in the 50-yard breaststroke by 0.01, clocking a time of 36.61.
UNE senior
Alison Leopard (Bloomington, Ill.) was victorious in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, while sophomore
Nori McLeod (Wiscasset, Maine) won the 50-yard backstroke (31.82).
Senior Ashton Piers (Falmouth, Maine) picked up the remaining individual event of the night, touching the wall in the 50-yard butterfly in 32.53 -- 0.06 seconds ahead of the Nor'easters'
Allie Travnik (New Lenox, Ill.).
Both teams are off until the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships, which will be held February 19-22 at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center in White River Junction, Vt.
