Nor'easters cruise past WNEC to improve to 4-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass -- Junior Jessica Sweeney (Hampton, N.H.) won three events to help lead the University of New England to a 173-89 victory over Western New England College in a college women's swim meet Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Healthy Living Center.

Sweeney took top honors in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:44.86), 100-yard backstroke (1:08.55) and 100-yard individual medley (1:11.05).

Big Blue (4-1) received a pair of first-place finishes from junior Lizzie Warehem (Osterville, Mass.) and first-year Alex Cheney (Mansfield, Conn.). Wareham was victorious in the 100-yard fly (1:04.01) and 100-yard free (1:00.35), while Cheney won the 200-yard freestyle (2:09.78) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:52.55). The duo also each swam a leg of both of UNE's winning relay entries.

Junior Hannah Lipomi (Enfield, Conn.) and first-year Briana Hirst (Amherst, N.H.) also earned wins for the Nor'easters. Lipomi took the 100-yard backstroke (1:18.27) and Hirst the 50-yard breaststroke (36.15).

Senior Aimee Smachetti (Bristol, Conn.), junior Ashley Petersen (Manchester, Conn.) and first-year Carissa Ancona (Hope Valley, R.I.) each won an event for WNEC (2-4).

The Nor'easters have a long layoff before returning to action after the holidays when they participate in the Bob Mowerson Sprint Meet on Jan. 7 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Western New England hosts Colby-Sawyer College on Jan. 14.
