UNE comes back with four after halftime to edge Endicott

Big Blue had plenty to smile about after pulling out a key victory over the Gulls

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England received goals from four different players in the second half to come from behind and defeat Endicott College, 4-3, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action Wednesday night at the rain-soaked Big Blue Turf.

With their third straight win and fourth consecutive conference victory, the Nor'easters (6-4) improve to 4-1 in the TCCC. The Gulls fall to 7-5 on the season, and sit at 2-2 in league contests.

Trailing 2-1 with 13 minutes to play, UNE found the back of the net three times in the next 8:32 to gain control. Sophomore Michelle Oswald (Jay, Maine) put home a feed from senior Michaela Franey (York, Maine) moments later to spark the late flurry and level the match.

Franey converted a pass from junior Bree Tupper (Winthrop, Maine) in the 60th minute to give the Nor'easters their first lead of the game, but the Gulls answered right back 1:52 later when senior Lindsey Mills (Arlington, Mass.) pushed in her her second marker of the evening to tie things back up (3-3).

UNE first-year Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine) would put the hosts on top for good with 4:19 remaining, poking home a rebound into the open goal.

After being out-shot 10-4 in the opening period, the Nor'easters turned up the pressure after halftime and held a 15-5 edge in the frame.

Since dropping the initial seven meetings against Endicott in the all-time series, Big Blue has come out victorious in the last two. UNE ended the Gulls' season last year with a 3-2 overtime win in the semifinal round of the ECAC Championship.

Mills opened the scoring in the 17th minute with the lone tally of the first half, tipping in a drive by senior Cara Hanrahan (Franklin, Tenn.).

First-year Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) set up Tupper less than two minutes into the final stanza to even the contest, only to see Endicott sophomore Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine) restore the visitor's advantage (2-1) at the 39:09 mark.

For UNE, which hosts Regis College Saturday at 1 p.m., senior Ayla Nelson (Auburn, Mass.) made eight stops to earn the win.

The Gulls, who are at Gordon College the same day (11 a.m.), got eight saves from sophomore netminder Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.).
