BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Meryl Poulin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) recorded her team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 46:00 mark and Colby College held on down the stretch for a 1-0 non-conference field hockey victory over the University of New England Wednesday evening at the Big Blue Turf.
The Mules end their three-game losing streak with the win, and move to 5-7 on the season. With their six-game win streak snapped, the Nor'easters now sit at 9-5 overall.
UNE held a 9-3 edge in penalty corners in the first half, but only managed four shots on target. Play picked up after intermission, as both goalies were tested to keep the game close.
Following Poulin's marker, senior Liz Fontaine (Wilbraham, Mass.) made a pair of key stops in the final 20 minutes to preserve the slim Colby advantage, en route to a total of eight saves and the first shutout posted against the Nor'easters all season.

For the match, the Mules out-shot the hosts 12-11, while the Nor'easters finished with a 14-5 cushion in penalty corners.
Colby returns to NESCAC play Saturday, hosting an 11 a.m. contest against Connecticut College.
UNE, which is tied at 6-1 in the TCCC standings with Nichols College entering the regular-season finale, square off against the Bison Saturday in Dudley, Mass. at noon. The winner secures the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming TCCC tournament.
