BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College grabbed five of the top eight places to total 23 points and win the Maine Intercollegiate Championship, held Saturday on the Polar Bears' campus. Bates College (36) came in second out of the 10-team field.
First-year Cody Horowitz was the first to cross the finish line for Bowdoin, claiming the individual title with an eight kilometer time of 25:43 -- good enough for a 0.68-second victory over Bobcats first-year Noah Graboys.
The Polar Bears also took the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 8th spots of the 140 runners to settle on their team score.
The University of Southern Maine (87), Colby College (119), the University of New England (168), Maine Maritime Academy (185), UMaine Farmington (200), Saint Joseph's College (233), UMaine Presque Isle (268), and Thomas College (286) rounded out the field.
Leading the Big Blue effort, first-year
Brandon Mulligan (Westfield, Mass.) punched a time of 27:16 to place 26th.
The other four Nor'easters factoring in the scoring finished 75th, 76th, 79th, and 81st -- just 17 seconds apart. Senior
Josh Grenier (Otisfield, Maine) led the pack with a time of 29:15, followed by first-year Nathan DiMartino (Hilton, N.Y.), junior
Jonathan Dupuis (Groveton, N.H.), and first-year Daniel Raboin (Lunenberg, Mass.).
UNE is off for two weeks until October 30, when it travels to Colt State Park -- the home of Roger Williams University -- for The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Championship.
