Chilly weather can't cool off red-hot Nor'easters

Senior Michaela Franey pushed her season goal total to 20 with a pair of scores

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Michaela Franey (York, Maine) scored a goal in each half, as the University of New England field hockey team ran its win streak to six games with a 5-1 The Commonwealth Coast Conference win over Gordon College on a blustery Saturday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

After starting the season by losing three of its first seven, UNE improves to 9-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Fighting Scots slip to 5-11, 3-4 in TCCC matches.

Franey opened the scoring 6:17 into the contest when she poked home a crossing pass from sophomore Laura Egounis (Boscawen, N.H.).

The Nor'easters would tally two more scores before the half to build a comfortable cushion. Junior Bree Tupper (Winthrop, Maine) caged her ninth goal of the season at the 27:52 mark, then first-year Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine) converted a Michelle Oswald (Jay, Maine) feed with 33:29 elapsed.

Gordon got on the board at 48:22 of the second half when junior Samantha Neverett (Athol, Mass.) set-up classmate Clara Baker (Underhill, Vt.).

Big Blue pushed its lead back to a three-goal margin exactly four minutes later on Franey's 20th goal of the season. First-year Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) assisted on the play.

Tavella would notch a goal on a rebound of her own shot in the final minute to round out the scoring.

UNE held a significant advantage in both shots (23-5) and penalty corners (15-6). Senior Ayla Nelson (Auburn, Mass.) had three saves to record the victory.

First-year goalkeeper Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) turned aside 11 saves for the Fighting Scots, who got a pair of defensive saves from sophomore Eleanor Helai (Keene, N.H.).

The Nor'easters play their final home regular-season contest Wednesday when Colby College comes to town for a 7 p.m. match.

Gordon travels to Tufts University on Tuesday (5 p.m start).
