Michelle Oswald's sixth goal of the season extended the Big Blue win streak to five

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Michelle Oswald (Jay, Maine) converted a pass from first-year Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine) 3:41 into overtime to give the University of New England a 4-3 non-conference victory over the University of Maine-Farmington in field hockey action Tuesday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

After her initial shot was saved by the UMF keeper, LaPointe stepped up to take the rebound and slipped it over to Oswald to knock in the game-winner.

The Nor'easters -- winners of five straight -- improve to 8-4 on the year, while the Beavers drop to 8-4. UNE has now defeated UMaine Farmington the last two seasons, after coming up on the losing end in the six previous meetings.

UMF senior Hattie Laliberte (Guilford, Maine) put the visitors on the board first in the 12th minute, taking a pass from classmate Emma Deans (Gorham, Maine) and registering the first of her two scores on the afternoon.

Big Blue leveled the contest just over seven minutes later, when sophomore Laura Egounis (Boscawen, N.H.) set up first-year Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) for the rookie's second goal of the season.

UNE senior goalie Ayla Nelson (Auburn, Mass.) had 12 saves by halftime, as the game was still tied at 1-1.

Laliberte restored the Beavers' advantage in the 58th minute, only to see UNE junior Bree Tupper (Winthrop, Maine) knott things up once again with a goal 1:43 later.

Tavella put the Nor'easters in front for the first time in the 61st minute, but UMF sophomore Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) redirected a drive by Deans with 2:39 left in regulation to make it 3-3 and send the match into extra time.

Nelson posted 14 stops for UNE, which resumes TCCC play Saturday against Gordon College (1 p.m.).

For UMaine Farmington, which travels to Rivier College the same day (1 p.m.), senior goalie Sarah Brown (Windham, Maine) made 11 saves.
