LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College won eight of 11 individual swimming events and one relay race en route to a sweep of the University of New England and Norwich University in a women's tri-meet Saturday afternoon at Tarbell Pool. The Bobcats defeated UNE, 88-48, and the Cadets, 99-32. The Nor'easters got the better of Norwich, 98-22.
Senior Sarah Reingold (Oakland, Calif.) recorded a pair of event wins for Bates, taking the 50-yard backstroke (31.07) and 100-yard butterfly (104.44). Six other Bobcats claimed victories, including classmate Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio), who won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.68.
Drake edged out
Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) in the 100 free (56.88) to get the win, shortly after Wareham out-sprinted Drake in the 50-yard freestyle. The two were separated by 0.01 in the race, as Wareham (26.03) was able to touch the wall first.
The UNE sophomore also swam to victory in the 50-yard butterfly (28.48).
Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.) picked up two second-place finishes, coming in just about three seconds behind Norwich's Anne Vayda (Burlington, Vt.) in both the 100-yard breaststroke (114.09) and 200-yard individual medley (2:28.27).
Three other Nor'easters placed second in events on the day. Sophomore
Nori McLeod (Wiscasset, Maine) finished behind Reingold in the 50 back (32.46), first-year
Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) was edged out by one second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.43), and senior
Lauren Carter (Haverhill, Mass.) finished runner-up to Wareham in the 50 fly.
UNE next competes at Gordon College on Saturday (Jan. 16).
