Hanley, Leopard help Nor'easters swim past Chargers

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year Rachel Hanley (Wiscasset, Maine) and senior Alison Leopard (Bloomington, Ill.) each won two individual races to help the University of New England Nor'easters take a 143-118 victory over the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers in a women's swim meet Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.

The win was the Nor'easters' third in their last four starts. They improve to 7-4 on the season, while the Chargers drop to the .500 mark at 4-4.

Hanley took first place in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.05) and the 100-yard freestyle (59.85), while Leopard captured both long-distance freestyle events (500-yard at 5:46.94 and 1000-yard at 11:59.43). Hanley also swam a leg of UNE's winning 200-yard freestyle relay team.

First-year Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) also had a strong day for the Nor'easters, winning the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.88) and taking part in a pair of winning relay entries (200-yard IM, 200-yard free). Sophomore Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) took home first place in the 50-yard free with a time of 26.01.

Seniors Kallyn Smith (Northfield, Conn.) and Danielle Bowen (Litchfield, N.H.) won two events apiece for the Chargers. Smith won the 50 (31.01) and 100-yard fly (1:10.74) and Bowen the 50-yard backstroke (31.21) and 100-yard individual medley (1:08.21).

The Nor'easters return to action Feb. 10 when they host St. Joseph's College at 6 p.m. Colby-Sawyer travels to UMass Dartmouth next Saturday (Feb. 6) for a 1 p.m. meet.
