Mules finish strong in 7-2 win over Nor’easters

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Sophomore forward Michael Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored one goal and dished out three assists to lead the Colby College men's hockey team to a 7-2 victory over the University of New England on Friday evening at the Biddeford Arena.

Leading 2-1, Colby scored five times in the final 24:19 to win going away. The victory extends the Mules' unbeaten string to 10 games while improving their record to 8-2-2. UNE drops to 1-12-0.

Junior forward Billy Crinnion (Smithtown, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist for Colby, which held a slight advantage in shots on goal (34-31). Sophomore forward Chris Buonomo (Edison, N.J.) and first-year forward Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, Ill.) each chipped in a goal and an assist, while sophomore forward Dan Nelson (Northbrook, Ill.) set-up a pair of scores.

Senior defenseman Jeoff Jarnot (Concord, N.H.) and first-year forward Michael Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) rounded out the Colby scoring attack with a goal apiece.

Junior Cody McKinney (Weston, Fla.) played the opening 55:03 in goal for the Mules. He improved his record to 8-2-2 by stopping 26 shots. Senior Jared Tepper (Monroe Township, N.J.) came on to make three saves.

UNE received a first-period goal from first-year forward Jake Moscatel (Lexington, Mass.) and a second-period tally by first-year forward Brent Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt.). Sophomore forward Mike Tiano (Dover, N.H.) and first-year forward John Melancon (Lyman, Maine) assisted on the second goal.

First-year goaltender Dallas Ungurian (Edmonton, Alberta) had 27 saves for the Nor'easters.

Both teams return to action tomorrow. Colby will take on the University of Southern Maine in a road contest starting at 4 p.m. The Nor'easters are slated to host NESCAC power Bowdoin College at 3 p.m.
