Golf team 6th out of 11 at State of Maine Championship

VASSALBORO, Maine -- The Husson University golf team used a 1-2-3 finish to capture the 2009 Maine Intercollegiate Championship by 39 strokes in the two-day event hosted by Thomas College at Natanis Golf Course.

The University of New England placed sixth out of the field of 11 teams, totaling a two-day aggregate score of 667.

Junior Griffin Andrews (Rye, N.H.) led UNE with a two-day total of 167 (84-83). Senior Nathan Fairfield (Bath, Maine) finished at 169 (84-85), while sophomore Steve Dillon (Sanford, Maine) fired a career-best round of 79 in the final round to post 170. Sophomore Gage Robertson (Freeport, Maine) rounded out UNE's scorers with a two-day score of 171 (86-85).

Husson's Kevin Bryne totaled a 149 (80-69) over two days to earn medalist honors.

UNE returns to action Monday at the University of Southern Maine Fall Classic. The event was originally slated to be a two-day tournament but was has been shortened to one round due to tomorrow's forecast of inclement weather.
