UNE suffers first loss of season at Saint Joseph's

The Nor'easters fell for the first time this season, dropping a 3-2 decision at St. Joe's

STANDISH, Maine -- Junior Courtney Rague (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) scored a pair of goals, and Saint Joseph's College held on in the final minutes for a 3-2 victory over the University of New England in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday afternoon.

The Monks (3-0) won for the first time in seven meetings with UNE. The Nor'easters dropped their first contest of the season, falling to 3-1 overall.

Rague scored at the 5:07 mark to give the hosts the early lead, then doubled the advantage for St. Joe's, notching her second goal of the game 1:26 into the second frame.

Sophomore Michelle Oswald (Jay, Maine) cut the margin in half, scoring off a pass from junior Michaela Franey (York, Maine) in the 52nd minute.

Senior Jaimee Brett (Otisfield, Maine) gave the Monks some breathing room with just over five minutes remaining with a goal to put St. Joe's ahead, 3-1.

Senior Taryn Flagg (Livermore Falls, Maine) scored with 55 seconds left off an assist from junior Cassandra Bushey (North Hartland, Vt.) to bring UNE back within one, but the Nor'easters could not find the equalizer as time ran out.

The Monks, who got seven saves from sophomore Meaghan Johnson (Portland, Maine), will host Thomas College on Saturday.

Junior goalie Ayla Nelson (Auburn, Mass.) made seven stops for UNE, which travels to Salve Regina University the same day for a 1 p.m. game.
