BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Danielle Zorn (Mercer Island, Wash.) scored all six of her goals in the second half, including four straight to open up a close game, as Gordon College improved to 6-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 14-10 victory over the University of New England on Wednesday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots found themselves in an early 4-1 hole as four different UNE players found the net. Junior Katie Knaus (Kensington, Conn.) converted back-to-back free position shots to get Gordon within one (4-3), then the two teams exchanged goals in the final 2:09 to make the score 5-4 in favor of UNE at the half.
Gordon opened the second frame by scoring four consecutive goals -- two by Zorn -- to establish an 8-5 lead.
Nor'easter sophomore
Kate McCarter (Bellingham, Mass.) scored two straight goals, and
Mallory Long (Lewiston, Maine) added another to draw UNE even at 8-all.
After Knaus and McCarter offset one another with scores, Zorn ripped off a string of four consecutive goals over a six-minute stretch to give Gordon a 13-9 lead with 6:21 on the clock.
Each team would score once the rest of the way.
Zorn had five ground balls and five draw controls to go along with her six goals. Knaus matched Zorn with six tallies (on seven shots), while earning nine draw controls. She recorded goals on all three of her free-position shot attempts. Senior Annie Cameron (South Hamilton, Mass.) dished out six assists for Gordon, which won 20 of 26 draws to aid in the victory.
McCarter led the Nor'easters with four goals and two assists. Long and senior
Amanda Barker (Gloucester, Mass.) each scored twice. First-year Jessy Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.) continued her solid play with six ground balls, five caused turnovers and three draw controls.
Gordon senior goalie Chyanne Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y.) made 10 saves for Gordon, while UNE sophomore
Tara Geraghty (Barrington, R.I.) registered four.
The Nor'easters return to play tomorrow when they head to Gorham to play a non-conference game with the University of Southern Maine (4 p.m.).
Gordon concludes its regular season Saturday with key TCCC road contest at Roger Williams University (3:30 p.m.).
