SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Seniors Lindsay Fenton (Pelham, Mass.) and Michelle Thompson (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored the final four goals of the game as Western New England College rallied back from a two-goal deficit for a 12-10 victory over the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 10-8 with 16:35 remaining in the game, Fenton scored back-to-back goals to tie the contest at the 9:20 mark. Thompson then netted what would prove to be the game-winner with 6:13 left and added an insurance goal with less than three minutes to play.
The Golden Bears (6-5, 4-2 TCCC) held an 8-6 lead at halftime, only to see the Nor'easters storm out of the break with four straight goals to gain a two-goal advantage midway through the second period. Sophomore
Kate McCarter (Bellingham, Mass.) found the back of the net three times during the stretch.
In the opening period, Fenton and Thompson gave WNEC a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes. After exchanging scores, sophomore
Danielle Cate (Boscowen, N.H.) scored goals 1:50 apart to even the match (3-3) with 20 minutes to go in the frame.
McCarter gave UNE a one-goal cushion moments later, but the Golden Bears responded by recording four of the next five goals to grab a 7-5 edge. First-year Katie Toomy (Northborough, Mass.) tallied both of her markers in the game to cap the surge.
The teams traded goals in the latter stages of the period and headed into intermission with WNEC up by two.
Fenton led the Golden Bears with five goals, while Thompson registered three. Sophomore goalie Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal, making 13 saves.
McCarter matched Fenton for the game high in goals with five. Senior
Amanda Barker (Gloucester, Mass.) added a pair of scores.
Sophomore
Tara Geraghty (Barrington, RI) stopped 14 shots for UNE (3-8, 2-4 TCCC), which takes to the field on Wednesday for a non-conference match at Colby College. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
