Gophers dig in early for 20-14 women's lax victory

The Nor'easters received a five-goal performance from Amanda Barker in their 20-14 loss

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. -- Shannon Carabba and Colleen Dellostretto each scored five goals, as the Gwynedd-Mercy College Gophers picked up their first win of the season with a 20-14 decision over the University of New England Nor'easters in women's lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon.

The Gophers (1-1) got goals from six different players in the opening 11:56 to establish a 6-1 advantage.  Gwynedd-Mercy went on to score five more times in the opening frame to take an 11-6 cushion into halftime.

UNE closed the match in strong fashion, tallying five of the final seven goals.

Senior Amanda Barker (Gloucester, Mass.) scored five times to lead the Nor'easter attack.  She added a pair of assists and a team-high five ground balls.

Junior Mallory Long (Lewiston, Maine) contributed three goals and two assists for the Nor'easters, while classmate Ginny Lee (York, Maine) netted a pair of goals.  Sophomore goalie Tara Geraghty (Barrington, R.I.) was credited with 10 saves.

UNE (0-2) will play host to Wellesley College on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. game to be played at Memorial Field on the campus of Deering High School in Portland.
