NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Led by the strong performance of senior Ali Wagner (Monrovia, Calif.), the University of New England swim team placed sixth out of 22 teams at the 2009 New England Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Tripp Athletic Center Natatorium on the campus of UMass Dartmouth.
Wagner earned all-New England accolades in three separate events, finishing fifth in all three butterfly races. She posted a time of 28.13 in the 50, 1:02.86 in the 100, and 2:21.99 in the 200.
Senior Erica Johnson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and first-years Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.) and Lindsay Baldini (Hyannis, Mass.) had two all-New England performances apiece. Johnson was second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.07) and fifth in the 200-yard free (2:02.92). Shea placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.77) and sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:45.38), while Baldini was fourth in the 100-yard free (56.03) and third in the 200-yard free (2:00.62)
Also cracking the list of all-New England performers was junior Alison Leopard (Bloomington, Ill.), who placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:33.47.
Keene State College won the championship with a team total of 899. Bentley University (833), St. Michael's College (514), Roger Williams University (512), Western Connecticut State University (486) and UNE (481) rounded out the Top 6.
