Nor'easters hand Monks their first loss in the pool

Alison Leopard took wins in both freestyle distance events to lead UNE to a 136-66 victory

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Led by three total victories from junior Alison Leopard (Bloomington, Ill.), the University of New England women's swim team improved to 6-2 with a 136-66 victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

Leopard claimed victory in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:49.00) and the 1000-yard freestyle (11:53.52).  She was also part of the Nor'easters' winning 400-yard freestyle relay squad.

UNE also had five swimmers claim victory in one individual race and one relay event, including seniors Ali Wagner (Monrovia, Calif.) and Erica Johnson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), and first-years Lindsay Baldini (Hyannis, Mass.), Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.) and Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.).  Wareham's first leg (56.21) of the 400-yard freestyle relay established a UNE pool record

For the Monks, who suffered their first loss to fall to 4-1, sophomore Lindsay D'Ascanio (Kennebunk, Maine) took a win in the 200-yard backstroke (2:25.47) and first-year Jamie Wojtkiewicz (Bedford, N.H.) was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley (2:31.99).

The Nor'easters return to competition Saturday when they host Gordon College at 1:00 p.m.  St. Joe's is off until Jan. 24 when it heads to Husson University for a tri-meet with Wheelock College.
