Huskies nip Nor'easters at UNE Invitational

Senior Cory Guenette shot a career-low 76 in UNE's opening match

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine golf team opened its season by winning the University of New England Invitational by virtue of a tie-breaker Friday afternoon at Cape Arundel Golf Club.

The Huskies posted a total of 310, as did the host Nor'easters, but Southern Maine's No. 5 player, junior Eric Gosline (Pittston, Maine), shot 85 to top UNE's fifth score of 91.  St. Joseph's College rounded out the field with a total of 313.

St. Joe's junior Matt Cotreau (Lunenburg, Mass.) fired a four-over-par round of 73 to capture medalist honors at the event for the second consecutive season.

Senior Ben Loss (Wilmette, Ill.) led the Huskies with a 74.  Classmate Ben Roberge (Auburn, Maine) carded a 78, while senior Brent Profenno (Standish, Maine) and first-year Cody Berkowitz (Saco, Maine) each shot 79.

The Nor'easters were led by senior Cory Guenette's (Acushnet, Mass.) career-best 76.  Other scorers for UNE included first-year Sean Caddigan (Bethel, Maine) at 77, junior Nathan Fairfield at 78, and senior Shawn Pabst (Franklin, N.H.) at 79.

The third-place Monks got a round of 78 from junior Steve Sands (Westbrook, Maine), 79 from senior Andy LeConte (York, Maine), and 83 from junior Devin Hersey (Caribou, Maine).
