BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Juniors India Lowe (Gloucester, Mass.) and Caitlin Albert (Gorham, Maine) each scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Southern Maine field hockey team to a 5-2 victory over the University of New England in a non-conference game played Monday afternoon.
The Huskies won for the second straight time to even their record at 4-4, while UNE dips to 2-4.
Lowe opened the scoring at 23:50 of the first half, putting home a feed from Albert. Albert then tallied her fourth goal of the season two minutes before the half, then notched another goal--assisted by first-year Brianna Beisaw (Jay, Maine)--a little more than two minutes into the second half to give USM a 3-0 advantage.
Lowe followed two minutes later with her fifth goal of the campaign, with Beisaw collecting her second assist of the contest. First-year Heidi Swett (Turner, Maine) scored her first collegiate goal at 50:55 to give Southern Maine a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Nor'easters were able to chip away at the deficit in the final 12 minutes. Junior Taryn Flagg (Livermore Falls, Maine) set up senior Nicole Mace (Readfield, Maine) for her sixth goal of the year, and sophomore Cassandra Bushey (North Hartland, Vt.) tallied an unassisted goal with just under four minutes to play.
Junior Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) played the opening 42:15 in goal to earn the win for the Huskies. She turned aside eight shots. First-year Lyndsey Cronin (Liberty, Maine) came on to register six saves in relief.
Sophomore Ayla Nelson (Auburn, Maine) had eight saves for the Nor'easters, who return to action Thursday at home versus Thomas College (4:00 p.m.).
Southern Maine will look to make it three straight wins Wednesday in a road contest at Worcester State College (7:00 p.m.).
