BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Rebecca Stephens (North Andover, Mass.) tied the score with less than five minutes in regulation, then tallied 59 seconds into overtime to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs a 4-3 sudden-victory decision over the University of New England Nor'easters in a college field hockey game played Wednesday afternoon.
The Corsairs halted their modest two-game losing streak while upping their record to 5-2. UNE lost for the first time in three outings to slip to 2-3.
UMass Dartmouth opened with possession in overtime and was able to force a penalty corner. Stephens, who had notched an unassisted goal to force the extra frame, controlled the ball after a scramble in front of the cage and knocked home a shot from close range. Senior Connie Jones (Springfield, Mass.) was credited with an assist on the play.
UNE got on the board first when senior
Kim Anderson (Bowdoin, Maine) re-directed a centering pass from classmate
Nicole Mace (Readfield, Maine) into the back of the goal.
Sophomore Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, Mass.) then recorded back-to-back goals to give the Corsairs a 2-1 lead heading into halftime. Sophomore Natalie Brown (Falmouth, Mass.) assisted Kinchla's first goal.
The Nor'easters tied things up 2:43 into the second half when junior
