BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior forward Nicole Mace (Readfield, Maine) scored two goals, including the go-ahead tally late in the first half, to help the University of New England to a 4-3 victory over St. Joseph's College in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday afternoon.

UNE picked up its first win of the season to improve to 1-2, while the Monks (2-1) suffered their first setback in three starts.

The Nor'easters jumped out to a quick start, establishing a 2-0 lead 12:58 into the contest.  Mace got the first goal from close range on an assist from junior forward Taryn Flagg (Livermore Falls, Maine), then first-year Michelle Oswald (Jay, Maine) set up sophomore Michaela Franey (York, Maine) on a penalty corner.

St. Joe's responded with back-to-back goals by junior forward Julia Ostrowski (Albany, N.Y.).  Sophomore Kayla Nowell (Bridgton, Maine) assisted on the first, and Ostrowski converted a penalty stroke for the second.

Mace gave UNE the lead for good at 33:11 when she scored on a penalty corner.  Franey and senior Kim Anderson (Bowdoin, Maine) were credited with assists.

The two teams each notched a score the rest of the way.  Flagg had an unassisted goal at 39:12, then the Monks pulled within one (4-3) 14 minutes later when Nowell set up first-year forward Sarah Bartell (Exeter, N.H.).

Sophomore Ayla Nelson (Auburn, Mass.) made seven saves for the Nor'easters, who held a 22-14 advantage in shots.  First-year Meaghan Johnson (Portland, Maine) registered 12 stops--nine in the second half--for St. Joe's.

UNE returns to play Saturday when its heads to Western New England College for a 6:00 p.m. game.  The Monks entertain Fitchburg State College on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
