Nor'easters advance with 9-0 shutout of Gordon

BEVERLY, Mass. -- Jess Silvio '09 (Beverly, Mass.) pitched a five-inning one-hit shutout to lead the fourth-seeded University of New England Nor'easters to a 9-0 win over eighth-seeded Gordon College Thursday afternoon in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Softball Tournament action played at Endicott College .

Silvio's lone hit allowed came in the top of the second when Fighting Scot clean-up batter Lindsay Knuckles singled to center field.  Silvio walked two and struck out one in improving her record to 4-1.

The Nor'easters would break the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Katie Morin '08 (Lewiston, Maine) had a two-run double, Julie Monteiro '10 (Portsmouth, R.I.) a two-RBI single, and Sarah Hamel '08 (Rochester, N.H.) and Lisa Baillargeon each added run-scoring hits.

Morin finished with two hits, two runs scored and three batted in.  Baillargeon and Megan Gaedje '09 (Tolland, Conn.) were also repeat hitters for UNE, which had nine hits in its four innings at the plate.


The Nor'easters (23-12) advance to play top-seeded Endicott College in a winners' bracket game starting at 5:00 p.m.
