BRISTOL, R.I. -- Kate Malenczak '11 (Sayville, N.Y.) scored four goals, including the go-ahead tally with seven minutes remaining, to help the Roger Williams University Hawks escape with a 12-10 victory over the University of New England Nor'easters in a quarterfinal-round game at The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament.
The second-seeded Hawks (12-3) advance to face No. 3 Western New England College, a 17-14 winner over Colby-Sawyer College, on Thursday. UNE concludes its season with a record of 7-11.
The match was close throughout. The Hawks would establish a 5-3 halftime advantage behind the play of Libby Stout '09 (Concord, Mass.). With her team trailing 3-1, Stout tallied three of Roger Williams' four unanswered goals to close the frame. Stout would finish with four goals to match Malenczak's output.
After a quick RWU second-half score, Malenczak sandwiched goals around a UNE goal by Amanda Barker '09 (Gloucester, Mass.) to give the hosts an 8-4 advantage.
But UNE would put together a rally, recording four straight goals to tie the match at 8-all with 12:37 remaining. Mallory Long '10 (Lewiston, Maine) triggered the spurt with back-to-back goals, then Ashley MacDonald '08 (Billerica, Mass.) and Danielle Cate '11 (Boscawen, N.H.) found the net.
Roger Williams would then grab control with four consecutive goals by four different players, the last coming on a free-position shot by Kasey Beckwith '10 (Franklin, Conn.) at the 2:22 mark.
MacDonald led the Nor'easters with four goals, while Long and Barker finished with two apiece. Goalies Jackie Price '10 (Billerica, Mass.) and Tara Geraghty '11 (Barrington, R.I.) combined to make 11 saves.
