BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Bowdoin College Polar Bears overcame an early 4-0 deficit for a 7-4 game-two win to earn a split of a non-conference doubleheader with the University of New England Tuesday afternoon in college softball action at Claude Dubois Field.
UNE's Sarah Hamel '08 (Rochester, N.H.) had a two-out opposite-field RBI single to provide the Nor'easters with a 3-2 victory in game one.
Trailing 4-0 after an inning of the nightcap, Bowdoin would respond the very next inning with three runs. The Polar Bears took advantage of a pair of UNE errors, and Lauren Coven '10 (Ridgewood, N.J.) produced a run with a single to center.
The visitors tied the game in the top of the sixth when Kate Chin '08 (Belmont, Mass.) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She would later advance to third on a UNE infield error, then score on a wild pitch.
Bowdoin put the game away with three runs in the seventh, once again taking advantage of two UNE errors, including a miscue that allowed the go-ahead run to score. Chin plated an insurance run with an RBI single.
Julia Jacobs '10 (Ridgewood, N.J.) earned the pitching win with six innings of one-hit relief. She walked two and struck out six in improving her record to 10-5. Offensively, Coven and Courtney LaPierre '09 (Gorham. Maine) each had three hits to pace Bowdoin's 12-hit attack.
Besides providing the winning hit in game one, Hamel upped her pitching record to 11-5 with a solid performance. She allowed five hits and no earned runs while striking out nine and issuing no walks.
UNE's Ashley DePasquale '09 (Uxbridge, Mass.) was the lone repeat hitter in the contest. DePasquale would have a two-run home run in the second game, her first career round-tripper.
Bowdoin (22-9) returns to play Thursday with a single game at Colby College. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.
The Nor'easters (19-11) will host New England College on Friday for a conference doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
