BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Midfielder Kayte Devine '08 (New Fairfield, Conn.) scored six goals, including five in the first half, as the Western New England College Golden Bears breezed to a 17-3 victory over the University of New England Nor'easters in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse match played Wednesday afternoon.
Winners of five of their last six, the Golden Bears up their record to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play. UNE suffers its fifth straight setback to drop to 2-7, 0-3 in TCCC matches.
After UNE tri-captain Ashley MacDonald '08 (Billerica, Mass.) opened the scoring, WNEC went on a tear, reeling off eight consecutive goals in the first half and the first four goals of the second frame to open up a commanding 12-1 cushion. Devine helped fuel the first-half barrage by netting four straight tallies, including a pair of free-position opportunities.
Jeanmarie Barbato '11 (Huntington Station, N.Y.) scored three times after halftime, and Jillian Caracciolo '08 (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) added a pair.
Devine, who came into the game as the Golden Bears' fourth-leading scorer with 16 goals, notched her six goals on just eight shot attempts. Barbato finished with five goals, while Caracciolo added a pair of assists to her two-goal performance.
Western New England used an aggressive defense to register 33 caused turnovers on 46 UNE miscues.
Starting goalie Marissa Bonitatibus '11 (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) played the first 45 minutes of the game and was credited with six saves. Reserve Erin Doherty '11 (Westford, Mass.) came on to record two stops.
MacDonald had two goals for the Nor'easters, while Sam Robinson '08 (Loudon, N.H.) scored once. Jackie Price '10 (Billerica, Mass.) made 18 saves.
The Golden Bears will host TCCC foe Curry College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Nor'easters play a road match versus Regis College that same day (1:00 p.m.).
