BIDDEFORD, Maine -- In a The Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader at Claude Dubois Field, the University of New England Nor'easters scored seven runs in the first two innings of game two on their way to an 8-3 victory over Nichols College to earn a split of the twinbill.
Bison right-hander Lindsay Hassett '11 (Oxford, Mass.) was dominant in the opener, allowing just two hits and registering 10 strikeouts as the Bison took a 4-2 win.
After being stifled offensively in the opener, the Nor'easters would get the bats going early in the nightcap. Trailing 1-0 after a half an inning, UNE scored twice in the home half and five more times in the second. Megan Gaedje '09 (Tolland, Conn.) had an RBI single in the second, as did Jennifer Waldecker '10 (Hooksett, N.H.). UNE capatilized on a pair of Bison errors to tally four unearned runs in the frame.
Amber Zablowsky '11 (Rochester, Mass.) contributed six innings of solid relief to up her record to 7-4. She scattered seven hits and yielded two runs. Zablowsky walked none and induced 10 groundball outs. The only runs she allowed came in the seventh when Hassett hit a two-run homer to left-center.
Gaedje and Lauren Webb '10 (Jericho, Vt.) each had two hits and scored twice for the Nor'easters, who won despite being out-hit, 10-7.
Hassett (6-3) was the story in the opener for Nichols. She failed to allow a hit from the second through the sixth in recording the win.
Hassett would receive all the run support she would need in the first when the Bison pushed across three runs. Lauren Person ''08 (Vernon, Conn.) and Tracy Cullity '08 (Manchester, N.H.) had run-scoring singles, and Lauren Lombardo '10 (Wolcott, Conn.) plated the third run on a grounder.
Katie Morin '08 (Lewiston, Maine) and Sarah Hamel '08 (Rochester, N.H.) had RBI doubles in the opener for the Nor'easters (14-10, 10-6 TCCC), who host Anna Maria College Saturday at noon.
Nichols (16-11, 13-3) travels to Worcester State College tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 5:00 p.m.
