Hoffman helps Seahawks fly past Nor'easters

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Midfielder Robert Hoffman ' 08 (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) scored three times and handed out three assists to lead the Salve Regina University Seahawks men's lacrosse team to a 13-9 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over the University of New England Nor'easters Tuesday afternoon.

The Seahawks dominated the first half to jump out to an 8-1 advantage by halftime.  Hoffman scored twice and set up two other goals in the first 30 minutes.  Brandt Nelson '08 (Shelburne, Vt.) netted a pair of tallies in the second period to help Salve to its lead.

After Ryan McGrail '09 (Southboro, Mass.) notched an unassisted goal early in the third, UNE would respond with three consecutive goals.  Hoffman then closed the scoring in the third period at 5:14, and the Seahawks notched the initial two goals of the fourth period to take a commanding 13-4 cushion.

UNE would make things interesting in the final 11 minutes of play, scoring five times while holding Salve Regina scoreless.

Nelson finished with three goals for the Seahawks and Evan Gates '11 (Ridge, N.J.) added a pair.  Starting goalie Brian Walker '09 (Marshfield, Mass.) made five saves in the first half to record the victory.  The tandem of Phillip Buckley '09 (West Boylston, Mass.) and Brendan Vaughan '11 (Newton, Mass.) stopped six shots in relief of Walker.

Mike Nawrocki '09 (Baldwin, Md.) scored three times for UNE and Dan Leyden '09 (Northfield, Mass.) added a pair of goals.  Goalie Andy Briggs '09 (Scituate, R.I.) turned aside 10 shots.

The Seahawks (4-6, 2-3 TCCC) were able to overcome 15 penalties for the win.  They host nationally-ranked Western New England College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

The Nor'easters (2-10, 0-7) entertain Wentworth Institute of Technology that same afternoon.  Opening face-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
