QUINCY, Mass. -- The University of New England Nor'easters got a 14-strikeout performance from Sarah Hamel '08 (Rochester, N.H.) in game one, then broke open a scoreless game two with six runs in the top of the seventh for a 7-1, 6-0 sweep of Eastern Nazarene College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader Monday afternoon at McCoy Field.
Hamel was dominant in the opener, setting down 14 ENC batters via strikeout to improve her record to 6-4. She scattered six hits and was nicked for an unearned run in the bottom of the first.
Offensively, the Nor'easters were paced by Julie Monteiro '10 (Portsmouth, R.I.), who contributed a career-high three hits. Hamel helped her own cause with a pair of hits, including a two-run single in the third. Megan Gaedje '09 (Tolland, Conn.) and Ashley DePasquale '09 (Uxbridge, Mass.) were also repeat hitters.
The two teams would play a scoreless second game until the top of the seventh when UNE scored six runs on six hits while taking advantage of two Crusader errors. DePasquale knocked in the game-winning run on a groundout. Stephanie Podolski '11 (Coventry, Conn.) had a two-RBI single, and Monteiro and Lisa Baillargeon '08 (Berlin, N.H.) added run-producing hits.
Jess Silvio '09 (Beverly, Mass.) and Amber Zablowsky '11 (Rochester, Mass.) combined for a six-hit shutout. Zablowsky worked the final five innings, allowing four hits and no walks to improve her mark to 5-4.
Jacqueline Tierney had a pair of hits in each game for the Crusaders (3-23, 3-11 TCCC).
The Nor'easters (11-9, 7-5) return to work tomorrow for a home doubleheader with Regis College. First pitch at Claude Dubois Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
