NEWPORT, R.I. -- In a The Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon, the University of New England Nor'easters and the Salve Regina University Seahawks split.  The Nor'easters won the first game by a score of 5-2, then dropped the nightcap, 3-1.

The Seahawks were able to earn a split in the second game when Kristen Danubio '10 (Glen Rock, N.J.) delivered a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Salve Regina (13-13, 11-3 TCCC) trailed 1-0 in the fifth inning when Sarah Ramsey '09 (Muncy, Pa.) led the inning off with a double. After a fly out, Danubio hit a high fly just over the wall in left-center field.

In the opener UNE (9-9, 5-5 TCCC) took advantage of several Salve Regina miscues, scoring five unearned runs. In the top of the fourth, Megan Gaedje '09 (Tolland, Conn.) and Lauren Webb '10 (Jericho, Vt.) each reached on errors. Katie Morin '08 (Lewiston, Maine) walked to load the bases, and after a strikeout, Chelsea Cummings '08 (Oxford, Maine) walked to bring in Gaedje with the first run of the game.  Sarah Hamel '08 (Rochester, N.H.) drove in Webb with a single to make it 2-0. After another strikeout, Jennifer Waldecker '10 (Hookset, N.H.) reached on the third Seahawk error of the inning, which allowed Morin and Cummings to score.

That was all the scoring Hamel (5-4) needed for the win. Hamel allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out eight batters.

Salve Regina pitcher Sarah Jakiela (13-8) struck out 13 batters despite picking up the loss. She got the win while pitching three scoreless innings of relief in the second game. Jakiela had 18 strikeouts on the day, giving her 195 for the season, which is a new school record.

The Nor'easters are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Eastern Nazarene College tomorrow.
