PORTLAND, Maine -- The nationally-ranked Western New England College men's lacrosse team got four goals and one assist from attackman Tim Santye '10 (Skillman, N.J.) on its way to a 19-4 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over the University of New England on Tuesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
The win keeps the Golden Bears--ranked 14th nationally--perfect in conference play at 4-0, while upping their overall record to 5-2. The Nor'easters come up winless for the fourth straight game to fall to 2-7 overall, 0-4 in TCCC matches.
Santye scored twice in the first period to help the Golden Bears build a 4-1 advantage. WNEC would push its lead to 7-2 at the half, then scored six times in both the third and fourth quarters to win going away.
Mike Santare '11 (South Salem, N.Y.) notched three goals for the winners, including a pair of man-up goals. WNEC was a perfect 3-for-3 in extra-man situations.
WNEC's Anthony Nardella '08 (Beverly, Mass.), Kyle Walsh '10 (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Andre Gagne '11 (South Hadley, Mass.) contributed two goals apiece. Bill Greider '10 (South Windsor, Conn.) was dominant on the draw, winning 13 of 17 faceoffs and finishing with a total of 11 ground balls.
Dan Leyden led the Nor'easters with one goal and two assists. Eric Santos '09 (Jamestown, R.I.), Luke DiFiore '11 (Gloucester, Mass.) and Steve Smith '11 (Walpole, Mass.) added the other goals.
The Golden Bears held advantages in shots (51-34), ground balls (46-34) and faceoffs won (19-8).
Starting goalie Ben Barlow '11 (Newport, R.I.) made a total of 13 saves in three quarters of work for WNEC, which hosts NESCAC foe Tufts University tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
Andy Briggs '09 (Scituate, R.I.) was credited with 12 stops in 54:40 of action for the Nor'easters, who play a road match with New England College next Wednesday (April 9).
