BOSTON -- The University of New England Nor'easters pounded out 31 hits en route to a 20-1, 17-7 doubleheader sweep of the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards in The Commonwealth Coast Conference softball action Wednesday afternoon at Carr Diamond.
Both games were halted after five innings due to the eight-run rule. The Nor'easters are 4-2 overall, 2-0 in conference play. Wentworth falls to 0-6, 0-2 league games.
In game one the Nor'easters led 10-1 after just two innings of play. Caroline Engwer '10 (Wrentham, Mass.) had a pair of RBI singles to help the offense, while Lauren Webb '10 (Jericho, Vt.) plated a pair of runs with a hit and a walk.
The Nor'easters would get five more runs in the top of the third. Angie Damon '10 (Scarborough, Maine) had a two-run single, and the Nor'easters took advantage of three walks and a Wentworth error.
Engwer finished with three hits and three RBI, while Webb contributed a trio of hits and five runs scored. Katie Morin '08 (Lewiston, Maine) had an inside-the-park home run in the fifth. Winning pitcher Sarah Hamel '08 (Rochester, N.H.) allowed four hits in improving her record to 2-1. She walked none and struck out 11.
Game two was much of the same as the Nor'easters scored six times in the second inning to establish control early. Chelsea Cummings '08 (Oxford, Maine) knocked in a pair with a double, and Megan Gaedje '09 (Tolland, Conn.) and Rachel Boutin '09 (Winslow, Maine) poked RBI singles.
Gaedje aided in the outburst with a two-run single and Jennifer Waldecker '10 (Hooksett, N.H.) plated two with a triple to right field.
Boutin, Waldecker and Lisa Baillargeon '08 (Berlin, N.H.) had three hits apiece in the nightcap. Amber Zablowsky '11 (Rochester, Mass.) came on in relief to pick up the win. She allowed three hits and two earned runs over three innings to run her record to 2-1.
Amanda Schiffer '11 (Seymour, Conn.) had two hits and two runs batted in for Wentworth in game two.
The Nor'easters return to the diamond Saturday (March 29) when they head to Milton, Mass. for a TCCC doubleheader with Curry College (1:00 p.m.)
