Wellesley jumps out early and never looks back

The Blue outscore the Nor'easters 10-1 in the first half en route to a 15-3 victory

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College used a quick start to down the University of New England 15-3 in a non-conference women's lacrosse match played Saturday afternoon.

The win lifts the Blue to 4-1 on the season. The Nor'easters drop to 2-3.

Wellesley struck at the 27:58 mark in the first half, when Halley Geller (Berkeley, Calif.) broke away for her first goal of the game. The Blue scored twice more in the next 26 seconds, as Molly Morrow (Bow, N.H.) found the back of the net and Geller added her second goal, to take a 3-0 lead with 27:31 remaining.

The Blue then stretched the lead to 10-0 with three more goals from Geller, two from Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, Va.) and one each from Briana Roberge (Bow, N.H.) and Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, Md.).

Meanwhile, the Wellesley defense stifled the Nor'easter attack, holding UNE to just one goal in the period when Ashley MacDonald '08 (Billerica, Mass.) scored at the 7:32 mark on an assist from Ginny Lee '10 (York, Maine).

Entering the second half with a 10-1 lead, the Blue once again scored first, when Roberge netted her second goal of the day with 20:21 remaining. Carlie Brigham '09 (Derry, N.H.) answered for the Nor'easters with a free position goal at the 17:38 mark.

But Wellesley continued to dominate play, as Roberge put two more balls in the back of the net, and Catherine Schaefer (Coxsackie, N.Y.) added two goals as well. Sam Robinson '08 (Loudon, N.H.) scored for UNE in the final minutes of the game. 

Lee tallied one assist, four ground balls and two draw controls. McDonald added four draw controls and one ground ball, while Brigham chipped in five ground balls and two caused turnovers. In goal for UNE, Tara Geraghty '11 (Barrington, R.I.) tallied four saves in the first half, while Jackie Price '10 (Billerica, Mass.) picked up nine saves in the second period.

The Nor'easters open their The Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule Tuesday (March 25) when they head to Bristol. R.I. to take on Roger Williams University at 3:30 p.m.
