Nawrocki helps Nor'easters ease past Mariners

Mike Nawrocki scored twice in the third period and once in the fourth

The junior attackman scores three times in the second half in an 11-8 win

PORTLAND, Maine -- Mike Nawrocki '09 (Baldwin, Md.) scored three second-half goals as the University of New England Nor'easters pulled away for a hard-fought 11-8 win over the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in a non-conference men's lacrosse game played Tuesday evening at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

 

The match was tied 1-1 after a period and 5-all at the half before UNE outscored Maine Maritime, 3-1, in the third quarter to take control.  After Nate Bolduc '08 (Farmington, Maine) put home the first goal of the period to give the visitors a 6-5 lead, Nawrocki sandwiched goals around a score by Eric Santos '09 (Jamestown, R.I.) to put UNE up 8-6.

 

Maine Maritime midfielder Christopher Keiley '11 (Holliston, Mass.) opened fourth-quarter scoring to cut the Mariners' deficit in half at 8-7, but the Nor'easters would respond by scoring three of the game's final four goals.  Chris McCauley '08 (Rehoboth, Mass.) found the back of the cage with 10:58 remaining for the eventual game-winner.

 

Chad DeLuca '11 (Mashpee, Mass.) contributed three goals for the Nor'easters, while five other players scored once.  Steve Smith '10 (Barre, Vt.) chipped in with three assists.  Goalie Andy Briggs '09 (Scituate, R.I.) stopped 18 shots to record the win.

 

For Maine Maritime (0-1), Garrett Lake '08 (Farmington, Maine) finished with a game-high four goals.  Keiley added a pair of assists for a three-point evening.  Patrick Jones (Kennebunk, Maine) came up with 14 saves.

 

The Nor'easters (2-3) return to action Saturday when they host Salem State College at 1:00 p.m.  Next up for the Mariners will be their home-opener versus Becker College on Saturday.  That match is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start.
