Box Score
COCOA BEACH, Fla. -- The University of New England took advantage of three Slippery Rock University errors in the sixth inning to plate three runs in a 3-1 win Tuesday afternoon.
The victory enabled the Nor'easters (1-1) to earn a split of the doubleheader, and in the process, handed Slippery Rock (5-1) its first loss the season.
Neither team would be able to push a run across the plate until the top of the sixth when Lisa Baillargeon '08 (Berlin. N.H.) led off with a single and moved to third when the Rock's first baseman misplayed the ball. She would score when Katie Morin '08 (Lewiston, Maine) followed with a single. The Nor'easters tacked on two additional runs on a pair of Slippery Rock errors.
The Rock threatened in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run before UNE recorded an out. With a runner on second base, Morin came up with a hot smash, then tagged the runner before throwing to first to complete the double play.
Sarah Hamel '08 (Rochester, N.H.) scattered four hits and struck out eight to earn the win. She was able to work her way around six walks.
Baillargeon had a pair of singles for the Nor'easters, who play two scrimmages tomorrow before taking on New England College Friday (March 14).
