Libby dials long distance in UNE's 69-58 win

BOSTON -- Guard Lyndie Libby '11 (Buxton, Maine) made five 3-pointers en route to a career-high 17 points as the University of New England led wire-to-wire in a 69-58 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology Wednesday evening at Tansey Gymnasium.

The win squares UNE's record at 10-10 and evens its TCCC ledger at 4-4.  The Leopards (9-11, 2-6 TCCC) lost for the sixth time in their last seven outings.

Libby was perfect on the evening, making all six of her field goal attempts, including five from beyond the arc.  She added five rebounds and a pair of assists.

The Nor'easters got 25 points from their bench, including 13 from Marissa Hesketh '08 (Tolland, Conn.) and a career-best 10 from Chelsey Meszaros '11 (North Clarendon, Vt.).  The frontcourt duo of Sara Pelkey '09 (Barre, Vt.) and Katie Diggins '10 (Merrimack, N.H.) contributed 16 points and 18 boards.


UNE would get off to a quick start and established a 31-19 lead at the break.  Wentworth shot just 24.1 percent (7 of 29) in the frame.

The Leopards warmed up in the second half, shooting 50.0 percent (14 of 28) and were able to get the deficit into single digits.  The Nor'easters came away victorious despite failing to register a field goal in the last 5:31.  UNE helped its cause by converting 16 of 21 (76.2 percent) of its free throw attempts after halftime.

Emily Cring '08 (Cicero, N.Y.) led all scorers with 22 points and hauled down a game-high 16 caroms.  Meaghan Gardner '10 (Shrewsbury, Mass.) came off the bench to tally 12 points.

UNE, which returns to the hardwood Saturday (Feb. 9) at Roger Williams University, held a commanding 46-32 advantage on the backboards.
