The Nor'easters nearly upended reigning conference champion Salve Regina University
Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Salve Regina University's Erin Phillips '11 (Morristown, N.J.) made a 15-foot jump shot with 0.5 seconds left to give the reigning conference-champion Seahawks a 55-53 come-from-behind victory over the University of New England Nor'easters in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.
Coming out of a Salve timeout, guard Allegra Lovoy '09 (Charlestown, R.I.) drove the length of the floor before finding a wide-open Phillips, who knocked down a 15-footer from the left corner. On UNE's previous possession, Lovoy had come away with a steal after a Nor'easter offensive rebound.
The game was tight throughout (5 ties, 9 lead changes), particularly in the second half. After jumper by Marissa Heskekth '08 (Tolland, Conn.) gave UNE a 53-51 advantage, the Nor'easters would fail to score the rest of the way.
Forward Kristen Stone '08 (West Roxbury, Mass.) brought the Seahawks even on their next possession, converting a jumper with 1:52 on the clock.
Neither team could convert on their ensuing possessions, including an 8-footer in the lane by UNE's Alli Gamache '09 (Dudley, Mass.) that spun in-and-out with 15 ticks left.
The Seahawks trailed 28-22 at the half after shooting a shoddy 26.7 percent (8 of 30) from the floor. The Nor'easters were not much better at 29.4 percent (10 of 34) but held a 28-20 rebounding edge to help build their six-point lead.
Stone finished with a game-high 18 points for Salve Regina, which improved to 46.7 percent (14 of 30) shooting in the second half. Lovoy played a solid all-around game, contributing 16 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals in 39 minutes. Forward Allison Moen '08 (Yonkers, N.Y.) posted a double-double (10 points, 13 boards) and blocked three shots.
Guard Carrie Bunnell '11 (Barnet, Vt.) scored a team-high 14 points to pace UNE. Sara Pelkey '09 (Barre, Vt.) added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Katie Diggins '10 (Merrimack, N.H.) had eight points and nine caroms.
The win stretches Salve's win streak to four games. The Seahawks (9-5, 3-0 TCCC) will face Nichols College for a road contest Wednesday (Jan. 23) at 8:00 p.m.
The Nor'easters (7-8, 1-2 TCCC) lost for the third time in their last four outings. They will travel to Eastern Nazarene College Wednesdsay for a 6:00 p.m. tilt.
