Pilgrims come away with 63-61 overtime win

Free throw shooting woes hurt the Nor'easters in a loss of their TCCC opener

HENNIKER,  N.H. – Guard Ashley Hutton '09 (Lebanon, N.H.) nailed a jump shot with 19 seconds remaining to give the New England College Pilgrims a 63-61 overtime win versus the University of New England Nor'easters in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game played Saturday afternoon at Bridges Gymnasium.

The game was a mutual conference-opener for each team.  NEC improves to 5-7 overall, while the Nor'easters slip back to the .500 mark at 6-6.

NEC would score the first two baskets of the game to take a quick 4-0 lead, but UNE would respond by grabbing their first lead of the game (12-11) at the 14:16 mark.  The two teams would continue to battle evenly through the remainder of the half, which saw nine lead changes.  NEC hit two foul shots late to head into halftime up 24-22.

NEC built an early six-point lead in the second half, but UNE would use a 7-0 run to go ahead 35-34 with 13:01 remaining in regulation.  UNE would grab their largest lead (51-46) with 3:50 left on the clock, but NEC rallied as Hutton hit a 3-pointer with 1:44 remaining to put the Pilgrims up 52-51.

UNE's Katie Diggins '10 (Merrimack, N.H.) would make one of two from the foul line with just seconds remaining to send the game into overtime tied at 52-all.

The two teams would exchange baskets in overtime before Hutton's clutch jump shot provided the winning margin. The Nor'easters had two shots to win over tie in the final six seconds but came up empty.

Hutton finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the winners, while Katie Plankey '09 (Columbia, Conn.) scored eight points and dished out four assists.  LaShawnda Wilson '09 (Burlington, Vt.) chipped in eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Diggins recorded the third double-double in her last four games with 16 points and 13 rebounds.  Annie Foster '09 (South Paris, Maine) added 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor.

The Nor'easters struggled mightily from the free throw line, converting just 5 of 19 attempts (26.3 percent).  They also made only 2 of 12 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.

UNE hosts Curry College this coming Tuesday (Jan. 15).  Tip-off time at the Campus Center is 6:00 p.m.
