BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Forward Kayla Blank '09 (Whitesboro, Vt.) scored a goal in each half to propel the Castleton State College Spartans to a 2-0 shutout of the University of New England in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
Winners of three straight, the Spartans improve to 3-1, while the Nor'easters stand at 0-2.
Blank would get Castleton State on the scoreboard 15:51 into the match when she converted a feed from back Tricia Watson '09 (Patterson, N.Y.). The Spartans controlled play through much of the first half, racking up a decisive 13-5 advantage in shots.
The Spartans would extend their lead 10 minutes into the second frame when Blank notched an unassisted goal, her third of the season.
For the afternoon Castleton State held an 18-13 lead in shots and 12-11 edge in penalty corners.
Trisha Clark '09 (East Dover, Vt.) and Siobhan Whittemore '11 (Springfield, Vt.) split time in goal for the winners. Clark earned the victory by turning away four shots in the first half. Whittemore came on to register three saves in the second stanza.
Castleton State will look to make it four straight wins tomorrow when it takes on Saint Joseph's College of Maine at 1:00 p.m.
Ayla Nelson '11 (Auburn, Mass.) was credited with 13 saves for the Nor'easters, who will be looking for their first win Wednesday at St. Joe's. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
