Veiga, Havelin Lead UNE to Second-Place Finish

Southern Maine dominates field to claim first

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Under hot and humid conditions at Rotary Park Saturday morning, the University of Southern Maine men's cross country team took the top four spots en route to a first-place finish at the 2007 University of New England Invitational.

Southern Maine twin brothers Curtis and Nick Wheeler '08 (Derby, Vt.) put on quite a show.  Curtis Wheeler nipped his sibling by a second to win the event with a time of 27:48 over 8,000 meters.  Nick Wheeler was followed by Husky teammates Chris Hopkins '08 (Worcester, Mass.) and Marc Halvorsen '11 (Falmouth, Maine).  USM finished with a team score of 18.

#Matt Veiga# '11 (Lynn, Mass.) led the Nor'easters to a second-place finish by earning fifth overall with a time of 29:55.  #Josh Havelin# '11 (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) came in two seconds behind Veiga to claim sixth.  #Dan Kelleher# '11 (Norton, Mass.) placed just out of the Top 10 -- 11th with a time of 31:13.

The event featured a meet-record 102 finishers.

The Nor'easters return to action next Saturday at the Shacklette Invitational hosted by Saint Anselm College (11:00 a.m.).
