The men had their best showing since the 2000 season at the Pop Crowell Invitational
WENHAM, Mass. - Paced by the one-two combination of Matt Veiga '11 (Lynn, Mass.) and Josh Havelin '11 (Seneca Falls, N.Y.), the University of New England had an impressive fifth-place showing at the Pop Crowell Invitational hosted by Gordon College Saturday morning.
The Nor'easters recorded a team score of 165 to grab the fifth spot in the 20-team field. It was the men's team's best finish at the event since the 2000 season. The University of Southern Maine Huskies totaled score of 29 to capture the meet. John Messer of Westfield State College won the individual title with a time of 26:34.
Veiga placed 14th with a time of 27:49 over 8,000 meters. Havelin was two behind Veiga with a time of 28:01.
Sam Powell '08 (China, Maine) was the third UNE runner to cross the line, placing 46th with a time of 29:21. Josh Grenier '11 (Otisfield, Maine) and Dan Kelleher '11 (Norton, Mass.) rounded out the top five for the Nor'easters.
UNE races at the James Early Invitational hosted by Westfield State College next Saturday (Oct. 6).
