Alex Toregas '08 (above) registered a career-high 17 kills to lead UNE to its first win
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Alex Toregas '08 (Chevy Chase, Md.) established a career high with 17 kills to help lead the University of New England to its first win, a 3-0 decision over Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.
Toregas put down six balls in the first game, as the Nor'easters built an early 8-0 lead en route to a 30-16 win. UNE came away with game two by the score of 30-20, then polished off the victory by holding off a late Salve surge in game three to win, 30-27.
Toregas, who hit .414 (17-5-29) for the match, added five blocks. Claire Varner '10 (Breckenridge, Mich.) contributed eight kills and seven digs, while going 9-for-9 on serves received.
UNE setter Alissa Ehmke '08 (Baileys Harbor, Wisc.) distributed a season-high 32 assists to go with three blocks. Defensively, Ellen Choinski '10 (Saunderstown, R.I.) led the way with 10 digs and 18 of 19 on serves received.
Deanna Salter '10 (Norton, Mass.) led the Seahawks with five kills and Nealyn Dunlop '09 (Marion, Mass.) added four.
The Nor'easters (1-7, 1-0 TCCC) return to the court Tuesday evening when they host Eastern Nazarene College for a league match-up starting at 7:00 p.m.
Salve (2-6, 0-1) will entertain Framingham State College for a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
