Tarr Lifts Nor'easters over Mariners in Men's Soccer

Ryan Tarr '10 (above) lifted UNE to a 1-0 win over Maine Maritime, converting a corner kick in the 88th minute

UNE wins its season-opener for first time since 1997

CASTINE, Maine - Ryan Tarr '10 (Hermon, Maine) knocked home a ball off a corner kick, giving the University of New England a 1-0 non-conference men's soccer win over Maine Maritime Academy in the season-opener for both teams.

The two squads would play scoreless soccer for more than 87 minutes before Brad Carlson '09 (Scarborough, Maine) served a corner kick into the box.  Tarr corraled the ball and deposited it into the lower left-hand portion of the goal for the only tally of the afternoon.

The victory was the first season-opening triumph for the Nor'easters since the 1997 season when they finished with a 13-6-1 record.

UNE goalkeeper Derek Poulin '10 (Scarborough, Maine) made four saves to earn his third career shutout.

The Nor'easters, who held a 19-4 advantage in shots, will play at the University of Southern Maine on Labor Day (1:00 p.m.).
