Volleyball Drops Season-Opener to Springfield College

Regional power Springfield took a 3-0 win over UNE in the season-opener for both teams

UNE to face Colby-Sawyer, RIC on Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Aylene Ilkson '09 (Baldwin, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs to pace the host school in a 3-0 win over the University of New England in day-one action Friday evening at the Springfield College Invitational.

Game scores were 30-22, 30-17, 30-26.  The Pride, who were 27-8 a year ago, open the season at 1-0, while UNE falls to 0-1.

Co-captain Claire Varner '10 (Breckenridge, Mich.) contributed seven kills for the Nor'easters, while Alex Toregas '08 (Chevy Chase, Md.) added six.  Alissa Ehmke '08 (Baileys Harbor, Wisc.) and Ellen Choinski '10 (Saunderstown, R.I.) combined for 13 assists.

Defensively, Angie Gust '11 (Manitowac, Wisc.) dug out nine balls, and Angela Cicia '08 (Sunderland, Mass.) came up with seven.

UNE faces Colby-Sawyer College Saturday morning at 9:00, then wraps up play at 1:00 p.m. versus Rhode Island College.
